Hulu Pulls the Plug on Live-Action ‘Hitman’ Series
After nearly a decade in development, Hulu has officially canceled its live-action Hitman series, according to filmmaker Derek Kolstad. The project, based on the popular stealth-action video game franchise, is “dead in the water,” Kolstad confirmed in interviews at South by Southwest (SXSW).
A Long Development Road
First announced in November 2017, the series was a joint venture between Hulu and Fox 21 Television Studios, aiming to bring the iconic Agent 47 to the small screen. Kolstad, known for creating the John Wick franchise, was attached as an executive producer, and writer. However, the pilot script was never produced. Fox 21 Television Studios has since been renamed Touchstone Television under Disney’s leadership and hasn’t produced a new series since 2020.
Kolstad Expresses Disappointment
Speaking with The Direct, Kolstad expressed his disappointment with the cancellation. “It’s a little bit of a dagger in the chest. Who knows nowadays, but it’s dead in the water,” he said. “But, man, I love that thing, since I love that game and I love that character. But the problem is, I can write a screenplay, but no one’s going to proceed out and buy the screenplay. You’ve got to create the movie, you’ve got to make the show. But nothing’s happening with that man, sadly.” Screen Rant and VG Times also reported on the cancellation, citing Kolstad’s comments.
The Hitman Franchise
The Hitman franchise, developed by IO Interactive since 2000, began as a stealth-action gaming series centered around the genetically engineered assassin, Agent 47. The franchise evolved over two decades, culminating in the critically acclaimed World of Assassination trilogy (2016-2021).
What’s Next for IO Interactive?
While the Hitman TV series is no longer moving forward, IO Interactive is currently focused on developing a new entry in the 007 franchise, titled 007 First Light.
