Surge in Home Heating Oil Theft and Fuel Drive-Offs Reported Across Ireland

Rising fuel prices are driving a significant increase in the theft of home heating oil and “drive-off” incidents at petrol stations across Ireland, Gardaí have warned. Authorities are urging homeowners and fuel retailers to take preventative measures to protect themselves from opportunistic thieves.

Heating Oil Theft on the Rise

Gardaí in Clare are reporting a surge in thefts targeting above-ground oil tanks and mobile fuel bowsers. Similar reports have emerged from Donegal, where thefts were reported in the Fahan and Ballyshannon areas in recent days . With a full oil tank (900L to 1,500L capacity) currently worth between €1,500 and €2,500, homeowners are increasingly vulnerable .

Preventative Measures for Homeowners

To deter thieves, Gardaí recommend the following security measures:

  • Visibility: Preserve fuel tanks visible, as remote tanks are at higher risk.
  • Access Control: Restrict access to tanks by keeping gates closed and locked.
  • Security Lighting & CCTV: Install security lighting and CCTV systems.
  • Alarms & Devices: Install alarms in oil tanks and employ anti-siphoning devices.
  • Tank Screening: Plant shrubs or erect fencing to screen tanks from road view.
  • Lockable Gates & Fencing: Use lockable access gates and fencing around the tank.
  • Regular Checks: Check oil levels frequently to detect potential siphoning.
  • Smaller, Frequent Deliveries: Arrange for smaller, more frequent oil deliveries.

Drive-Offs at Petrol Stations Increasing

Alongside heating oil theft, Gardaí in Ennis, Clare, are investigating two drive-off incidents from petrol pumps that occurred on Tuesday, March 10th, at approximately 7pm. Drivers failed to pay for diesel and petrol . Authorities are advising petrol station managers nationwide to closely monitor for similar activity, as this is becoming a widespread issue.

Security for Vehicles and Machinery

Gardaí also advise securing vehicles and keys when not in use, and utilizing fuel tank cap locks and anti-siphoning devices on vehicles and machinery.

Ongoing Vigilance Advised

Sergeant Edel Burke of Kilrush Garda Station emphasized the importance of vigilance, stating that fuel tank security is a nationwide concern. Homeowners and business owners are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to their local Garda station.
