Nup to the Cup: Animal Rights Activist Gather for Smaller Protest

A smaller but passionate crowd gathered at a major intersection near the main entrance of a racecourse, marking another year of the “Nup to the Cup” protest. Organized by the Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses, this demonstration saw fewer attendees compared to previous years due to the location’s limited capacity.

While the presence was smaller, the group’s message remained strong. They advocate for better treatment of racehorses, highlighting the physical stress of racing, the use of whips, and the premature death of horses that can no longer compete.

Campaign director Elio Celotto emphasized the need to raise awareness about these issues. “They want to show you the glamour,” he stated. “They don’t tell you that the majority of racehorses have been killed prematurely because they don’t have the homes for them.”

Celotto noted a positive trend, stating, “We’re celebrating here today, and many people are doing it around the country, making it a fun day. But instead of it being a day that we exploit animals, today we remember animals and raise funds for many animal causes around Australia.”

The atmosphere, with beach chairs and drinks on ice, resembled a picnic more than a traditional protest.

However, as the crowd grew, demonstrators held up signs and banners with evolved messaging, drawing attention to their cause. While some members of the passing public displayed support, others reacted with hostility.

Celotto addressed these confrontations, acknowledging a potential disconnect from tradition. “I don’t believe they’re pro animal cruelty or pro horse racing,” he said. “I think they’re just venting at the fact that we’re opposing something that’s been a long-standing tradition. But traditions can change and we think eventually it will cease to exist, and perhaps could be replaced with Nup to the Cup day.”
