While managed aquatic facilities typically undergo stricter monitoring than natural waterways, elevated water temperatures create an ideal environment for microbial proliferation.

High water temperatures in hot tubs accelerate bacterial growth, turning poorly chlorinated systems into what Marc Hamilton describes as bacterial soups. Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Lurks in Pipes and Filters

Chief among these resilient pathogens is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Hamilton notes that this opportunistic bacterium frequently lodges in hot tub pipes and filters. Swimmers can inadvertently introduce the organism into a spa after walking on grass, as it occurs naturally in soil.

While generally harmless in the environment, Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause skin infections, particularly in vulnerable individuals.

Legionella Risks and Mild Illness Outcomes

Another rare but serious health risk associated with poorly maintained hot tubs is legionellosis. Individuals contract the Legionella bacterium by inhaling fine water droplets suspended in the air around contaminated systems.

However, according to Dr. Cécile Tremblay, a microbiologist at the CHUM, standard filtration and chlorination systems effectively prevent this contamination. When infections do occur, the illness often remains relatively mild, presenting with low-grade fever and a cough.

Hygiene Rules and Personal Precautions

Investigations into public aquatic centers have historically revealed elevated bacterial loads in a significant portion of tested facilities, highlighting the importance of personal hygiene. To minimize infection risks when using public swimming pools and hot tubs, health experts recommend several basic precautions:

  • Take a thorough shower before and after entering the water.
  • Avoid submerging your head underwater.
  • Never swallow hot tub or pool water, and prevent children from doing so.
  • Verify that proper chlorination and filtration are active when using a private spa for the first time.

Taking a shower prior to entering a spa is particularly critical for reducing organic contamination. Hamilton points out that studies indicate a single bather can introduce significant amounts of fecal matter into the water without pre-swim hygiene, making adherence to basic facility rules essential for public health.
