How to Transfer Data to a New iPhone: iCloud vs. Direct Transfer

Setting up a new iPhone or iPad using Apple’s Quick Start feature allows users to automatically transfer their data, though the process occupies both devices during the migration, according to official support documentation provided by Apple.

Quick Start Requirements and Preparation

According to Apple’s support guidelines, utilizing Quick Start requires a current device running iOS 11, iPadOS 13, or later. Users must ensure their current device has Wi-Fi enabled and Bluetooth turned on. Because the migration process occupies both gadgets, Apple advises choosing a time when neither device will be needed for several minutes. To begin the setup, the user simply turns on the new device, places it near the current one, and follows the onscreen prompts. If the setup prompt disappears, Apple recommends restarting both devices.

Data Transfer Methods and iCloud Options

During the setup sequence, users connect to Wi-Fi or a cellular network and may be prompted to activate cellular service, set up Face ID, or configure Touch ID, according to Apple. The system then offers distinct choices for data migration. Users who select iCloud download their applications and data in the background, allowing them to use the new device immediately. Alternatively, users choosing a direct transfer from the previous device must wait for the entire migration process to finish on both units before normal use can resume.

Hardware Connections and Enrollment Restrictions

Apple specifies that both devices must remain close to each other and plugged into a power source until the migration finishes. Transfer times vary based on network conditions and the volume of data moving between the devices. Users can also execute this transfer using a wired connection. However, Apple notes that Quick Start is unavailable if the new device is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business Manager.
