The 2024 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards took place on November 8, 2024, at the Bridgestone arena in Nashville, Tennessee, with Morgan Wallen taking home the coveted Entertainer of the Year award. The ceremony, broadcast on ABC and available to stream on Hulu the next day, saw Chris Stapleton emerge as the night’s biggest winner in terms of awards received.
Winners are determined by the votes of Country Music Association members, encompassing industry executives, artists, and professionals.
Despite facing ongoing controversy, Wallen was named Entertainer of the Year.He was not present at the ceremony. The Independent reports that Wallen’s win came as a surprise to many, given his recent legal issues and past controversies.
Chris Stapleton dominated the awards show, winning four categories, including Song of the Year and Single of the Year for his hit “White Horse.” Billboard confirms Stapleton’s four wins. He performed three times during the telecast, including a duet with Post Malone to open the show. Accepting the Male Vocalist of the Year award – a record-extending eighth time – Stapleton remarked, “I’m realy honoured for this, thank you very much.”
Wallen had been nominated for seven awards, four of which were for his collaboration with Post Malone,”I Had Some Help.” Though, neither the song nor Malone secured a win.
The announcement of Wallen’s win was momentarily marred by a mispronunciation by presenter Jeff Bridges, who announced him as “Morgan Waylon.”
Wallen’s win comes after he was arrested in April 2024 and charged with three felony counts related to an incident where he allegedly threw a chair from the roof of a Nashville bar. He also faced previous backlash for using a racial slur. The Independent has extensively covered these controversies.
