In the early 20th century, British philosopher Gilbert Ryle coined the phrase “the ghost in the machine.” He used this metaphor to challenge the dualist idea that the mind and body are separate substances, arguing instead that cognition and physical action are inextricably linked as part of a single system. Today, as artificial intelligence integrates into every facet of our professional lives, a new metaphor has emerged: the “Human-in-the-Loop” (HITL).

For many startups, HITL is the gold standard for AI implementation. It promises a seamless fusion of machine efficiency and human judgment. But as AI moves from simple productivity tools into high-stakes environments—from classrooms to combat zones—we have to ask: are we building a genuine safety mechanism, or just a convenient illusion of control?

When the term “Human-in-the-Loop” is used loosely, it often functions less as a safety feature and more as a way to shift responsibility. A human signature at the end of an automated process doesn’t automatically guarantee ethical integrity, especially if the person signing doesn’t fully understand how the underlying system reached its conclusion.

Maysa Hawwash, founder and CEO of Scale X, suggests that this approach is often a form of “responsibility shifting.” She compares it to corporate HR policies where an approval guideline is used to shield a company from liability. If a policy exists and an employee signs off on it, the company is technically cleared of responsibility, regardless of whether the policy makes sense or if the employee truly understands the implications.

This creates a pattern where responsibility is relocated rather than managed. Hawwash argues that this is a “lazy” approach that avoids critical thinking about how these systems impact actual communities. In this scenario, the human role becomes symbolic—a procedural checkbox rather than a meaningful intervention.

The solution isn’t to abandon HITL systems, but to treat them as rigorous design commitments. Currently, the race to bring AI to market has prioritized speed over downstream impact. This results in a reactive model of ethics, where problems are patched after deployment rather than prevented during development.

Because AI tools are no longer restricted to technical experts, they now influence decisions for people with varying levels of context and understanding. In this environment, developers cannot simply outsource responsibility to the end-user. True accountability requires intentional structures where the human is empowered to shape, question, and override the system with actual authority.

HITL as a Tool for Precision and Quality Control

While some use HITL as a shield, others use it as a necessary mechanism for accuracy. Abhay Gupta, co-founder of Frizzle, provides a practical example from the education sector. Frizzle was designed to help overworked teachers by automating the grading of math assignments.

Because AI struggles with the nuances of handwritten mathematics, Gupta implemented a functional HITL system. When the AI encounters unreadable handwriting or is unsure of an answer, it doesn’t guess; it flags the specific instance for the teacher to review and either approve or reject.

In this model, the human role is essential for two reasons:

  • Accuracy: AI can hallucinate or produce errors. The human acts as the final quality check to ensure the end-user receives correct information.
  • Human Connection: By allowing teachers to customize how feedback is delivered, the system preserves the relational aspect of teaching that AI cannot replicate.
