Hungary’s Orban Faces Tight Race as Opposition Holds Lead in Polls
Budapest – As Hungary approaches parliamentary elections on April 12, recent polls indicate a close contest between Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz party and the opposition Tisza party. While Fidesz has seen a surge in support, the opposition maintains a lead, according to a survey conducted by the research center “21” commissioned by 24.hu.
Poll Results Show Tightening Race
The poll, conducted between March 2 and March 6 with a sample of 1200 “confident” voters, reveals that Fidesz has reached 39% support – its highest level since October 2024. However, the Tisza party continues to lead with 53% of respondents indicating they would vote for the opposition.
Parliamentary Projections
Based on the survey data, the 21 research center predicts a potential landslide victory for Tisza if the election were held immediately. The center forecasts approximately 115 seats for Tisza, 78 for Fidesz, and 6 for the Mi Gazank (Our Motherland) party, which is nearing the 5% threshold required for parliamentary representation.
Orbán’s Stance on Ukraine
Recent statements by Prime Minister Orbán on his Facebook page @orbanviktor reiterate his government’s position against providing financial aid, weapons, or troops to Ukraine. He urged voters to ensure this policy remains in place during the April elections.
Zelenskyy’s Hope for Election Outcome
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously expressed hope that Orbán’s party will be defeated in the elections, suggesting that such an outcome could pave the way for improved relations between Ukraine and Hungary.
Recent Polling Data
Last week, opinion polls already indicated that the Tisza party was ahead of Orbán’s party, with a result of 50% to 38%.
