What are the Symptoms of Hyper-IgM Syndrome?

The most common sign of hyper-IgM syndrome is getting infections ofen. These can include:

  • Bacterial infections, like sinus infections and ear infections
  • Serious respiratory infections, like pneumonia
  • Unusual bacterial, fungal, parasitic, and viral infections because the immune system is weak

Frequent or ongoing diarrhea is also common in people with hyper-IgM syndrome.

What Causes Hyper-igm syndrome?

Hyper-IgM syndromes happen because of problems with your B cells. Usually, changes in your DNA that you’re born with cause these problems. These changes stop your immune cells from switching classes – changing the type of antibody they make from IgM antibodies to other types. You get these changes from one or both of your parents.

When you first get an infection from a specific germ, a type of white blood cell called a B cell makes IgM antibodies.
