I-25 Montgomery Off-Ramp Closure in Albuquerque Impacts Local Businesses

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Latest Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) is preparing to close the Montgomery off-ramp on I-25 in Albuquerque, potentially impacting local businesses. The closure, set to start Sunday night, will last for three weeks as part of the ongoing I-25 improvement project.

Impact on Nexus Brewery and Restaurant

Kenneth Carson, owner of Nexus Brewery and Restaurant, expressed concerns about the closure’s effect on his business, which has been located near the Pan American Freeway for 15 years. Carson stated that previous construction related to the I-25 project already led to a 30% decrease in sales, and he anticipates further drops during the three-week off-ramp closure. KOB.com reported that sales had previously dropped by 25-30% on certain days.

“Not only do we make our own beer, we have a full menu. We offer what’s called New Mexican soul food,” said Carson. He noted that NMDOT has been communicative and even designed a social media ad to help customers navigate to the restaurant during construction.

Customer Concerns

Customers have also voiced concerns about access to businesses in the area. Nicole Baca-Montaño, a customer of Nexus Brewery, expressed that the construction makes it less convenient to visit, despite it being one of her favorite restaurants. KOB 4 reported that Baca-Montaño remains committed to visiting when in Albuquerque.

Detour Information

During the Montgomery off-ramp closure, drivers will need to use Comanche or Jefferson and take the frontage road to access Nexus Brewery and nearby businesses. NMDOT has reportedly added signage to direct traffic to business access points. KOB.com reported that NMDOT provided communication resources for customers.

Project Timeline and Optimism

The I-25 improvement project is currently at its halfway point, but construction is expected to continue for some time. Carson remains optimistic that the completed project will ultimately improve access and business for establishments along the corridor. He believes the widening of the freeway will be beneficial in the long run. The project began in August 2024 and is expected to continue for two more years. KOB.com
