Ian McKellen Voices Doubts Over Oscar-Nominated Film ‘Hamnet’
Sir Ian McKellen, a celebrated Shakespearean actor, has publicly expressed his reservations about the film Hamnet, which explores a fictionalized account of William Shakespeare’s life and the death of his son. The film has garnered significant attention, receiving eight nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
McKellen’s Critique
In an interview with The Times, McKellen stated, “I don’t quite get it.” He questioned the premise of the film, which posits that the tragedy of Hamnet’s death directly inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet, saying, “I’m not very interested in trying to work out where Shakespeare’s imagination came from, but it certainly didn’t just approach from family life.” The Independent reports that McKellen believes the film’s plot details are “improbable.”
Specifically, McKellen found it hard to believe the film’s depiction of Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife, as being unfamiliar with the world of theatre. “The idea Anne Hathaway has never seen a play before? It’s improbable, considering what her husband did for a living. And she doesn’t seem to know what a play is!” he remarked.
‘Hamnet’ and its Reception
Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel, Hamnet dramatizes the death of Shakespeare’s 11-year-old son, Hamnet, in the 1500s. Entertainment Weekly notes that the film explores how this event might have influenced the creation of Hamlet. The film stars Jessie Buckley as Agnes (Anne Hathaway) and Paul Mescal as Shakespeare.
Despite McKellen’s skepticism, Hamnet is predicted to be a strong contender at the Oscars, potentially mirroring the success of Shakespeare in Love, which also took creative liberties with the Bard’s life. McKellen acknowledged the enduring public fascination with Shakespeare, stating, “Shakespeare’s perhaps the most famous person who ever lived, so of course there is some interest in what he looked like, what his relationship with his family was. And we can’t know.”
McKellen’s Upcoming Projects
McKellen is currently reprising his role as Magneto in Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December. He will also return as Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum in 2027. AOL
