Federal Investigation Underway After ICE Agents Kill Houston Motorist

A federal investigation is underway after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo during a traffic stop in Houston on Tuesday. Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed that agents were attempting to locate two Guatemalan nationals when they initiated the stop, but neither of the intended targets was inside the vehicle. Mr. Araujo, who had lived in the United States for 35 years, died at a hospital hours after being shot in the abdomen.

## Circumstances of the Traffic Stop
According to a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman, federal agents had been surveilling an address associated with two Guatemalan immigrants for weeks. Agents reported seeing white vans at the property during their initial surveillance. When they returned to the location on Tuesday, agents observed a white van and believed an individual inside resembled one of their targets.

Agents initiated a traffic stop at approximately 6:50 a.m. The vehicle was occupied by Mr. Araujo and three other men: Jose Trinidad Rojas Pliego, Daniel Tirado Pantoja, and Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo, the victim’s younger brother. Officials stated that the agents had looked into the vehicle’s owner prior to the stop and identified the owner as Mr. Araujo, who lacked legal immigration status.

## Conflicting Accounts of the Shooting
Federal authorities allege that Mr. Araujo attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against the agents, prompting one agent to discharge their firearm. However, no video evidence or other evidence has been produced to support the claim that the vehicle was weaponized.

The incident occurred without the use of body cameras, as the agents were not wearing them at the time of the stop, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The lack of body-worn footage has drawn scrutiny from family members and civil rights advocates, particularly as similar violent encounters between federal agents and civilians have increased. Data indicates that since September, more than 20 people have been shot at by immigration agents, with nearly all of these incidents occurring while the individuals were inside vehicles.

## Ongoing Investigations and Family Response
The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General is currently investigating the shooting. Additionally, the Houston office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed it will focus its inquiry on the alleged assault against a federal law enforcement officer.

Mr. Araujo’s family has publicly disputed the official account. During a news briefing on Wednesday, his son, Ronaldo Salgado, stated his belief that his father attempted to drive away because he was being pursued by unmarked vehicles. The family is calling for an independent inquiry into the events that led to the shooting.

Victor Hugo Salgado Araujo, who was a passenger in the van, remains in immigration detention in Conroe, Texas. Following the shooting, a vigil was held at the site of the incident, where community members gathered to leave flowers, candles, and messages in memory of Mr. Araujo, who was a father of three U.S. citizens and was reportedly in the process of obtaining a work permit.
