Ice Cube Reveals Unique Production of Pandemic-Era ‘War of the Worlds‘ Reboot
the latest adaptation of H.G. Wells’ classic alien invasion novel, War of the Worlds, recently premiered on Prime Video after a lengthy post-production process.Starring Ice Cube alongside Eva Longoria and Clark Gregg, this reboot distinguishes itself through a unique production approach necessitated by the constraints of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ice Cube detailed the unconventional filming experience and the reasons behind the delayed release in a recent appearance on Kai Cenat’s livestream.
Filmed in 2020, the screenlife thriller was completed in just 15 days, but with notable modifications to conventional filmmaking. Due to social distancing protocols, the director, Rich Lee, and the actors were physically separated during production. As Ice Cube explained, the entire film unfolds through the viewpoint of computer screens, a creative solution born from the limitations of the time. “That’s why it’s only the computer screen,” he stated. “But really, if shit went down, everybody would only have their screen to look at.”
The innovative approach extended beyond the remote filming process. A significant portion of the film’s footage comprises authentic surveillance camera recordings sourced from around the globe. This presented a considerable challenge in post-production, as the production team had to meticulously assemble and integrate this real-world footage. “Well, it was a Global movie, and they sold it to Amazon Prime,” Ice Cube clarified. “And it took a minute to finish the movie because of how it’s shot. All the footage is from real surveillance cameras all around the world. So they had to build all that shit.”
This new iteration of war of the Worlds, penned by Kenneth A.golde and Marc Hyman, joins a long history of adaptations stemming from Wells’ 1898 novel, including the famed 1938 radio drama by Orson Welles. The 2025 release offers a contemporary and relevant take on the story, reflecting a world increasingly reliant on digital connection and surveillance.
The cast also includes Andrea Savage, Iman Benson, and Henry Hunter Hall, contributing to a thrilling and timely reimagining of a science fiction staple. War of the Worlds is now available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
