Idaho Vandals Secure First NCAA Tournament Berth Since 1990, Toppling Montana in Big Sky Championship
BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Vandals (21-14, 9-9 Big Sky) are heading to March Madness for the first time in over three decades after a decisive 77-66 victory over the Montana Grizzlies (18-16, 10-8 Big Sky) in the Big Sky Conference championship game on Wednesday night. The win secures the program’s fifth conference championship and the Big Sky’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Vandals Overcome Early Challenges
Idaho began the game strong, establishing an early 18-8 lead with a physical presence and focus on interior scoring. Isaiah Brickner’s highlight-reel putback dunk ignited the Vandal offense. However, Montana responded with a 17-4 run, fueled by a flagrant foul on Biko Johnson, to take a 31-30 halftime lead.
Second-Half Surge Seals the Victory
The second half saw a back-and-forth battle with 10 lead changes before Idaho pulled ahead. Isaiah Brickner continued to attack the rim, although Brody Rowbury provided crucial scoring with timely perimeter shooting, including two key three-pointers. Despite foul trouble limiting forward Jackson Rasmussen, Seth Joba and Rowbury dominated the boards, contributing to Idaho’s commanding 42-28 rebounding advantage, including a 13-3 margin in offensive rebounds.
Key Performances Lead Idaho to Triumph
Isaiah Brickner led the Vandals with a game-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, achieving his first double-double of the season. Brody Rowbury added 12 points and Kolton Mitchell contributed 11 points despite battling a back injury. Trevon Blassingame similarly scored 10 points. For Montana, Money Williams and Te’Jon Sawyer each scored 19 points, and Brooklyn Hicks added 11.
Rebounding and Ball Control Prove Decisive
Idaho’s dominance on the boards and disciplined ball control were key factors in the victory. The Vandals committed only eight turnovers, continuing a trend from their tournament run. Despite shooting just 5-21 from beyond the arc, their ability to create second-chance opportunities proved decisive.
Looking Ahead
Idaho, under third-year coach Alex Pribble, has achieved its most victories since the 2015-16 season. The Vandals will now await Selection Sunday to learn their NCAA Tournament fate. Montana’s season concludes with a potential invitation to a postseason tournament. ESPN and AP News reported on the game.
