Indonesia's New Capital City: IKN Pushed Toward December Deadline

The Indonesian government is working diligently to finalize the construction of Nusantara, the new capital city in East Kalimantan, by this December. In a recent statement during the 23rd Congress of the Indonesian Engineers Association in Yogyakarta, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises Basuki Hariman expressed confidence that the offices would be ready by the target date.

"So, the offices must be ready by this December, and God willing, everything will be ready," said Basuki during the 23rd Congress of the Indonesian Engineers Association in Yogyakarta on Thursday, December 5, 2024.

The IKN development goes beyond just office buildings. Basuki emphasized that supporting infrastructure, including restaurants, cafes, laundries, and barbershops, are also being prepared to create a truly functioning city.

"So, we have prepared everything there," he said.

Building More Than Bricks and Mortar

While acknowledging the substantial progress, Basuki emphasized that IKN's development needs to encompass both physical and social aspects. He highlighted the importance of community engagement and "socio-engineering" to ensure a seamless transition for residents.

"The development of IKN is not only about physical development, but also non-physical aspects. For example, we have to organize the Sepaku area, it's not just about engineering, but the socio-engineering aspect needs to be stronger. Because we also have to consider the community," he said.

The minister further explained that specific geological challenges, with certain areas having weak clay shale soil, require special treatment to ensure the land can handle the city's infrastructure.

Prabowo Targets August 2028 for Government Offices in IKN

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo revealed that President Prabowo Subianto aims to relocate government offices to IKN by August 17, 2028, with all three branches of government, along with civil servants, moving by August 17, 2029.
>

"At the latest, on August 17, 2029. The executive, legislative, and judiciary, along with all civil servants, will (move) there," Dody said at the Ministry of Public Works on Friday, December 6, 2024.

Dody acknowledged potential delays in the IKN construction timeline due to prioritization of other government programs. He emphasized the current focus on the national food self-sufficiency program, stating that the Ministry of Public Works is concentrating on providing essential water for agricultural purposes.

Despite these considerations, Dody expressed confidence that the project would remain largely on target. He referenced the five-stage IKN development plan, running until 2045, initiated under President Joko Widodo, which is expected to cost an estimated IDR 466 trillion.
