Cordillera RDRRMC Prepares for Safe Holy Week Amidst Travel Surge

BAGUIO CITY – The Cordillera Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) is intensifying preparations for a safe and orderly observance of Holy Week, from March 28 to April 5, anticipating a significant influx of travelers despite current economic factors. The RDRRMC convened a pre-disaster risk assessment meeting on March 17 to coordinate efforts and finalize contingency plans.

Increased Mobility Expected Despite Oil Crisis

Kristian Tabisaura, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD) Region 1’s DRRM division, emphasized the importance of preparedness, stating that increased mobility is still expected for religious activities and family gatherings, even with high fuel prices [1]. The Ilocos Region is a popular destination for pilgrimage and tourism during this period.

Multi-Agency Coordination and Preparedness

Member agencies and local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (DRRMCs) are aligning preparedness and contingency plans to address potential emergencies, including vehicular accidents and medical incidents. Assets, equipment, and personnel from the four provincial DRRMCs are ready for deployment [1].

Government Resources on Standby

Several government agencies are contributing to the preparedness efforts:

  • Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD): Stockpiles of emergency supplies, including food and non-food items, ready-to-eat food, and bottled water, are on standby, along with an incident management team [1].
  • National Telecommunications Commission (NTC): Coordinating with telecommunications companies to ensure uninterrupted communication lines [1].
  • Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH): Will establish Lakbay Alalay assistance stations in strategic locations to aid motorists. Specific deployment locations will be announced soon [1].

Public Safety Reminders

The public is urged to remain vigilant and adhere to government safety protocols, preparedness tips, and official advisories. The Cordillera RDRRMC also reminds the public to be aware of the Department of Transportation’s road travel safety checklist – DR. BLOWBAGSY which means Driver’s License, Registration, Battery, light, oil, water, brakes, air/Accessories, Gas, Steering and Yourself (driver’/passenger wellness) [1]. Road users are reminded to observe traffic laws and practice road courtesy.

Commitment to Public Safety

The government reaffirms its commitment to protecting lives and communities during Semana Santa through proactive preparedness and coordinated efforts [1].
