West Asia Crisis Disrupts Travel, India Offers Visa Relief to Stranded Foreigners
Escalating tensions in West Asia, following attacks by the U.S. And Israel on Iran, have led to widespread flight cancellations and disruptions, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. India has responded by offering visa relief to foreign nationals currently in the country who have been affected by the travel chaos.
Flight Cancellations and Disruptions
The conflict has significantly impacted air travel across the Middle East and beyond. Air India has cancelled a total of 50 international flights as of March 1, 2026, with 22 cancellations announced specifically for Sunday . Indian airlines are projected to cancel 444 international flights on March 1, 2026, due to airspace restrictions in the region . The disruption affects one of the world’s busiest air corridors, causing significant delays and leaving passengers stranded at airports.
India’s Response: Visa Relief for Foreign Nationals
In response to the travel disruptions, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an advisory for foreign nationals in India. The MEA is urging those impacted to contact the nearest Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for assistance with visa extensions or to regularize their stay . The FRROs will provide the necessary support to ensure foreign nationals are not penalized for overstaying due to the unforeseen circumstances.
Impact on Indian Diaspora
The escalating conflict too raises concerns for the over 9 million Indians residing in Gulf countries, particularly in the UAE and Saudi Arabia . The UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain, previously considered safe havens, have arrive under threat due to hosting U.S. Military bases, prompting Iran to respond with missile and drone attacks . The recent death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has heightened tensions, with the next 48 hours being critical for the safety and well-being of Indians in the region .
Airline Responses
Besides Air India, other airlines have also adjusted their operations. IndiGo initially suspended operations until midnight but later extended the suspension . Air India has suspended flights to several destinations in the Middle East, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Muscat, Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, and Tel Aviv .
The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) has advised Indian carriers to continuously monitor airspace advisories and NOTAMs (Notices to Airmen) issued by relevant authorities .
