Dominant Performance Secures Pool B Top Spot
India had already clinched a semifinal berth before Wednesday’s match, but the win ensured they finished atop Pool B. They will now face Italy on Friday for a chance to compete in the final.
First Quarter Blitz
India demonstrated its speed and attacking prowess from the outset, putting significant pressure on the Welsh defense with quick breakaways. The hosts drew first blood in the 7th minute when Salima Tete initiated a move down the right flank, culminating in a powerful reverse hit from Sakshi Rana that beat the Welsh goalkeeper.
Navneet Kaur Shines
India continued to press, with Udita coming close to extending the lead from a penalty corner, but her attempt was cleared off the line. The momentum carried into the second quarter, with Navneet Kaur scoring in the 29th minute off a penalty corner, doubling India’s advantage. India dominated the first half, recording 15 circle entries.
Third Quarter Action
The Indian team continued to attack in the third quarter, with Neha nearly scoring with a reverse hit that was saved by the Welsh goalkeeper. Navneet Kaur then added her second goal in the 34th minute, converting a penalty corner to make it 3-0.
Wales responded with a goal from Betsan Thomas in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a momentary lapse in the Indian defense. However, their hopes of a comeback were dashed when Wales captain Elizabeth Bingham missed a penalty stroke in the 50th minute.
