Indonesia Accelerates Measles Immunization Campaign Ahead of Eid al-Fitr 2026
Indonesia is intensifying its measles immunization efforts nationwide, aiming to achieve 95% coverage within the next one to two weeks before the anticipated surge in travel during Eid al-Fitr 1447 Hijriah/2026. This push comes as health officials warn of the potential for increased measles transmission due to mass movement during the holiday season.
Rising Concerns Over Measles Cases
The Ministry of Health is prioritizing measles immunization in 50 districts and cities across the country. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized the importance of high immunization rates to prevent widespread outbreaks, noting that one infected person can potentially transmit the virus to 12-18 others.
Coordination with Local Governments
The acceleration of the immunization campaign is being carried out through community health centers (puskesmas) and integrated health posts (posyandu). Minister Sadikin confirmed that the Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, has pledged support for the initiative.
Health Posts to Offer MR Vaccination
In addition to the broader immunization campaign, the Ministry of Health is preparing to offer Measles Rubella (MR) vaccination services at health posts established along major transportation routes during the Eid homecoming (mudik) period. These posts will be equipped to assist travelers with children who have not yet received the measles vaccine.
Strengthening Health Facilities for Eid Travel
The Indonesian government is also bolstering health facilities at transportation hubs to support the smooth and safe flow of travelers during Eid al-Fitr 2026. Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi is collaborating with Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin to enhance health services, particularly in areas with high traffic volume. These health posts will serve as rest areas and provide emergency health checks for travelers and drivers.
Projected Travel Volume
Authorities anticipate that approximately 143.91 million people will travel during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr travel season, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Transportation.
