Indonesia’s Defense Ministry Denies Facilitating Large-Scale Pickup Truck Import
Jakarta – The Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Kemenhan) has refuted claims that it supported the import of 105,000 pickup trucks from India for use by the Red and White Village/Kelurahan Cooperatives (KDKMP). The denial comes in response to circulating reports alleging the ministry’s involvement in the procurement.
Ministry Response
Brigadier General TNI Rico Ricardo Sirait, Head of the Defense Information Bureau, stated unequivocally, “It’s not true, once again, it’s not true that it’s part of the Ministry of Defense carrying out facilitation and so on, it doesn’t exist.” Kompas.com reported on February 25, 2026.
Sirait clarified that in December 2025, Mahindra & Mahindra donated four vehicles to the Ministry of Defense. These vehicles, received through PT Agrinas Pangan Nusantara, were then distributed to Indonesian Military (TNI) units in North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh. He explained the vehicles have been utilized for disaster relief efforts, including logistics distribution, medical aid, and personnel transport.
Addressing Social Media Claims
The Ministry’s statement addresses claims made on social media, specifically an Instagram post by @play.speaak alleging the Ministry of Defense backed the import of 105,000 Mahindra Scorpio pickups, citing the donation of four units as evidence. The post similarly claimed that 35,000 units were parked at the Tanjung Priok Port in North Jakarta.
Defense Ministry Focus
Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait also addressed the Indonesian Military’s role in counterterrorism efforts, stating the TNI operates based on presidential orders and coordinates with the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT). Tempo Magazine reported on January 19, 2026, that the Defense Ministry views the TNI’s involvement in counterterrorism as having a clear legal basis.
Recent defense agreements also include the procurement of modern light vehicles. The Defense Ministry has signed agreements with Force Motors Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd to supply approximately 5,000 modern light vehicles to the armed forces. Daijiworld reported on this development.
In a separate diplomatic effort, Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto met with Pakistani Federal Minister of Defense Production Muhammad Raza Hayat Harraj to strengthen military ties. The Indonesian National Police (INP) reported on this meeting, highlighting the advancement of defense diplomacy and practical cooperation.
