Indonesia Seriously Eyes BRICS Membership for Economic Growth

Indonesia is actively considering joining the BRICS economic bloc, a move driven by a desire to expand its market access and champion the interests of developing nations.

The Indonesian government recently submitted its official expression of interest in becoming a BRICS member, marking the first step towards accession. This decision comes after a thorough internal study assessing the potential benefits for the nation.

### What’s Driving Indonesia’s Interest in BRICS?

Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry Spokesperson, Rolliansyah Soemirat, emphasized that the nation’s participation in international forums, including BRICS, is driven by a commitment to align with national interests, not simply for the sake of joining every forum.

“We have conducted many studies on existing forums and we have conducted studies to determine how Indonesia will participate in these forums,” Soemirat stated during a media briefing.

The government believes joining BRICS aligns with Indonesia’s “free and active” foreign policy and offers significant economic advantages, particularly in terms of market access for Indonesian businesses and industries.

Benefits Beyond Economic Growth

Indonesia sees BRICS as a platform to advocate for the interests of developing nations in the global arena. Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, after attending the BRICS Plus Summit in Kazan last week, highlighted the bloc’s importance for promoting the voice of the Global South.

### Next Steps for Indonesia

With its official interest submitted, Indonesia’s status within BRICS has changed to that of an “interested country.” The path to full membership involves a comprehensive evaluation process.
