Indonesia Becomes First Middle-Income Country to Pledge Funds to Gavi

Geneva, Switzerland, December 9, 2024 – In a landmark move for global health, the Republic of Indonesia has pledged US$30 million to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, marking the first time a middle-income country has contributed to Gavi’s replenishment effort for its next strategic period, “Gavi 6.0”. This significant contribution underscores Indonesia’s commitment to strengthening global immunization efforts and acknowledges the transformative impact of sustainable investments in vaccines.

Indonesia’s journey with Gavi spans 22 years. During this partnership, Indonesia has achieved remarkable progress in immunization, doubling the number of vaccines offered through its routine immunization program, reducing child mortality by fourfold, and transitioning through all stages of Gavi’s support. Now, Indonesia is stepping forward to become a Gavi donor, demonstrating the powerful impact of sustained investments in health and its ability to create a ripple effect of positive change.

Indonesia’s Gavi Impact: A Story of Transformation

Indonesia’s transition from a Gavi-implementing country to a donor showcases the Alliance’s model of partnership, aiming to empower countries towards self-sustaining immunization systems. Through Gavi’s flexible approach, Indonesia has been able to target support for equitable access to high-impact vaccines while building a robust national immunization program.

A Commitment to a Healthier, Safer World

“We welcome with deep gratitude this pledge, as well as Indonesia’s continued commitment to championing the vital importance of immunization in building a healthier, safer and more equitable world,” said Professor José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board. “Indonesia’s extraordinary journey with Gavi underscores how sustainable investments in vaccines can transform lives, health systems, and countries.”

“Indonesia’s contribution is a testament to the long-term impact of Gavi’s model and the strength of its partnerships,” said Dr. Sania Nishtar, CEO of Gavi. “As a country that has achieved remarkable success with Gavi support, Indonesia is now paying it forward, ensuring other nations can benefit from the same life-saving interventions. We are deeply grateful for their commitment.”

Gavi’s Mission: Protecting the World’s Children

Gavi has been instrumental in protecting millions of children worldwide. To date, the organization has helped immunize more than 1.1 billion children, saving over 18 million lives and significantly contributing to a 50% reduction in childhood mortality in low-income countries. Gavi’s impact extends beyond immediate health outcomes, playing a critical role in global health security by helping countries prevent and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.

Looking Ahead: A Global Call to Action

With the next strategic period (Gavi 6.0) focusing on reaching 500 million children and saving 8-9 million lives by 2030, Gavi seeks at least US$9 billion in funding. Indonesia’s pledge serves as inspiration for others to join the global effort. A pledging meeting, hosted jointly by the European Union and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is scheduled for early 2025 in Brussels. Governments, partner organizations, vaccine manufacturers, civil society, and the private sector are all invited to contribute to ensuring that all children have access to the lifesaving protection offered by vaccines.
