Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar Probed Over Private Jet Use
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in Indonesia is investigating whether Religious Affairs Minister Nasaruddin Umar improperly accepted a benefit – the use of a private jet – owned by Hanura Party Chairman Oesman Sapta Odang (OSO). The inquiry follows reports and public scrutiny regarding the minister’s travel to Makassar, South Sulawesi, for a working visit.
Investigation Details
KPK Chair Setyo Budiyanto stated the commission is working to determine if any corrupt practices occurred. “We cannot immediately discern that it’s unlawful, but we will process this. Whether or not it will be followed up, we’ll first make it open source,” Budiyanto said on February 18, 2026 according to Tempo.co.
Minister’s Explanation
Minister Umar explained he was attending a family invitation for an Islamic school inauguration. He acknowledged using a private jet but stated it was not his choice. “But the plane that arrived was [a private jet]. Was I not supposed to approach?” he said at the Istiqlal Mosque in Central Jakarta as reported by Tempo.co. He maintained that the invitation came from family with no official ties to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, questioning where the gratification would lie.
Reporting to the KPK
On February 23, 2026, Minister Umar proactively reported the use of the private jet to the KPK, hoping to set an example for transparency and good governance. He explained the jet was used for his duties in South Sulawesi due to the late hour and the need to return for an upcoming isbat trial as reported by Voi.id.
KPK’s Response and Potential Sanctions
The KPK will verify the report within 30 working days to determine if the benefit constitutes a state gift or a recipient’s personal gain. Because the minister reported the incident within the 30-day timeframe, he is currently exempt from criminal sanctions under Article 12B of the Corruption Law according to Voi.id. However, if the KPK determines the benefit should have been refused, the minister may be required to turn the value of the benefit over to the state treasury.
Further Scrutiny
The KPK has indicated it may seek information from Oesman Sapta Odang regarding the provision of the private jet as reported by The Jakarta Post.
