Influenza Vaccination Campaign in Querétaro Reaches Over 400,000 Doses Amid Rising Cases

As winter tightens its grip on Querétaro, Mexico, the state health secretariat has made significant strides in its influenza vaccination campaign, administering over 418,559 doses as of January 19, 2025. This achievement represents 67.56% of the state’s target of 619,499 vaccines, showcasing a strong effort to protect vulnerable populations during the cold season.

Despite these efforts, the ongoing flu season presents a challenge, with 189 positive flu cases reported across 13 municipalities, including Amealco, Cadereyta, Corregidora, El Marqués, and Querétaro. These cases affect individuals ranging in age from one month to 90 years, encompassing both men and women.

Tragically, three deaths have been recorded this season. A 52-year-old man from El Marqués and two individuals, an 83-year-old woman and an 85-year-old man, both from Querétaro, succumbed to the virus. A disturbingly consistent factor among the deceased is their lack of previous vaccination, highlighting the critical importance of the ongoing campaign.

The Ministry of Health urges individuals at high risk, including children aged six to 59 months, adults over 60, pregnant women, healthcare workers, and those with underlying health conditions, to prioritize vaccination. “During the cold season,” officials emphasize, “the risk of acute respiratory infections, including influenza, increases significantly."

Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy

To ensure the campaign’s success, it’s crucial to address any vaccine hesitancy within the community.

"It’s essential to rely on credible sources of information," Dr. Ana Martínez, an epidemiologist and public health expert, emphasizes. "Speak with your healthcare provider, consult reputable organizations like the WHO, or refer to official government health websites."

Dr. Martínez also stresses the importance of community outreach and education initiatives to raise awareness about the benefits of vaccination and dispel common myths or misconceptions. Targeted campaigns can be particularly effective in reaching vulnerable populations and addressing specific concerns.

Collaboration is Key

The vaccine campaign in Querétaro highlights the crucial role of collaboration between government agencies, healthcare providers, community organizations, and individuals.

By working together, these stakeholders can ensure that vaccines are readily accessible, accurate information is disseminated, and vaccine hesitancy is minimized. This collective effort is essential in protecting the health of the entire community and striving toward a healthier future.
