Habits vs. Addiction: Understanding the Difference

We often throw around the terms “habit” and “addiction,” but they aren’t the same. It’s crucial to understand this distinction. A habit is simply a behavior you repeat over time. Humans are naturally inclined to form habits – we do it constantly in our daily lives. The trouble begins when a habit transforms into a need. That’s when it crosses the line into addiction.

clinical guidelines define addiction by three key elements: tolerance, abstinence, and negative consequences. This primarily applies to substance addictions. Addictions related to social media – think Instagram, TikTok, or general internet use – fall into the category of “digital addictions.” Sadly, these aren’t currently recognized in standard diagnostic manuals.

Healthcare professionals face a challenge because conditions like “internet addiction” or “TikTok addiction” aren’t officially defined in international guidelines like the DSM-5 (American Psychiatric Association) or the ICD-11 (World Health Organization). Without a formal diagnosis,it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly when excessive use becomes problematic or addictive.

Though, don’t mistake a habit for an addiction. Digital addictions – to social media, the internet, or video games – often mimic the symptoms of substance addictions: tolerance, withdrawal, and negative consequences.

A habit becomes an addiction when it’s driven by a need. Consider this: you start checking social media simply out of routine, doing it constantly, perhaps even when you’re trying to sleep. You might find yourself reaching for your phone in bed and endlessly scrolling. That’s a habit. It’s not a problem until you need that moment of scrolling to feel calm. The issue arises when you experience distress if you can’t engage in that behavior.
