Instagram Brings Edits to macOS With AI Agent Support
Instagram has launched a desktop version of its standalone video editing app, Edits, exclusively for macOS. The release allows creators to integrate external AI agents directly into their workflow, according to The Verge. Matthew Simari, head of product management for Edits, noted that the platform features a Model Context Protocol (MCP) for its tools, explaining, “You can use any agent you want, you can use Muse — we would love you to — but really any agent you want of [your] choice, to edit, tweak, work with your video.”
The desktop expansion arrives as Instagram continues to push into longform and widescreen video content. While the mobile app launched last year, Simari confirmed that the desktop version was developed in response to heavy creator demand and the company’s broader AI integration plans. In September, Instagram introduced an AI “creative assistant” to the mobile version of Edits, which provides users with feedback and suggestions based on metrics like video retention and total views.
Workflow Integration for AI Agents
The new desktop application enables users to move between manual and agent-based editing. Simari provided an example of a creator using Meta’s Muse agent to access the Edits MCP to generate a rough cut from a local folder. Once the agent completes the tool calls to assemble the cut, the user can open the resulting project file within the Edits desktop interface to perform fine-tuning.
Beyond AI capabilities, the desktop version introduces professional-grade tools designed for larger screens. These include a full multi-track timeline, precise audio waveforms, and color grading tools. Meta also confirmed that users can utilize keyboard shortcuts that are compatible with other professional editing software.
Platform Availability and Feature Parity
The desktop app currently supports watermark-free 4K exports and multiple aspect ratios. Users can access the same audio library available on the mobile version, and any audio or text styles previously saved on mobile will carry over to the macOS app.
However, the ecosystem remains fragmented for now. The app is not yet available for Windows or Linux, and users cannot currently sync projects between their mobile devices and the desktop version. Meta stated it is actively working on cross-platform editing functionality and intends to release updates for the desktop app on a weekly basis.
