CEO Adam Mosseri revealed the development through Threads, sharing a user-captured screenshot that showcased the new functionality. The highlight is a subtle downward-pointing arrow icon positioned next to the familiar heart-shaped "like" button on comments. This icon empowers users to privately signal comments they deem inappropriate or uncomfortable.
"This isn’t a ‘dislike’ button like you see on YouTube," Mosseri clarified, emphasizing the tool’s purpose. "The goal is to give users a way to express discomfort in a private way."
While the functionality remains private, specifics surrounding its operation are still under wraps. Notably, other users won’t be notified when a comment is flagged. Instagram hasn’t publicly disclosed the potential consequences for users who repeatedly post offensive content.
There’s speculation that flagged comments might be relegated to the bottom of a comment thread, effectively reducing their visibility. Instagram’s ultimate aim is to cultivate a more positive and less toxic online environment.
