International Day of Play Celebrated in Lombardy with Focus on Child Development and Autism Support

The first International Day of Play, established by the United Nations in March 2024, was celebrated in Lombardy on October 20, 2024, with events at Palazzo Lombardia and Piazza Città di Lombardia. The regional government organized the event to highlight the role of play in child development, learning, and well-being, according to a statement from the Lombardy Region.

Governor Fontana Emphasizes Play as ‘Children’s Work’

Lombardy Governor Attilio Fontana, speaking at the event, described play as “the work of children” and emphasized its role in building relationships and fostering skills. “The game is the way through which children construct connections with the world, develop competencies, and bring families closer to their children,” Fontana said, referencing the pedagogist Mario Lodi’s teachings, as reported by the Lombardy Regional Council.

Genesio Rocca, president of Assogiocattoli, stressed the importance of analog play in an increasingly tech-driven world. “The goal is to encourage children to play again. Playing is culture, conviviality, and family time,” Rocca stated. He noted that while digital devices are becoming more prevalent, “the importance of sharing, group activities, and togetherness remains fundamental.”

PizzAut Project Aims to Support Autistic Youth Through Play

Nico Acampora, founder of PizzAut, a nonprofit promoting employment for individuals with autism, discussed the “Casa Autentica” initiative. Partnering with Playmobil and Toys Center, the project creates toys featuring PizzAut characters, with proceeds funding apartments for autistic youth. “We are in constant contact with regional officials, and the president visited our restaurant, expressing enthusiasm for our work,” Acampora said, according to a Lombardy Region press release.

Family-Focused Activities Draw Thousands to Piazza Città di Lombardia

The event featured interactive play areas, including construction sets, toy cars, and board games, alongside creative workshops. Governor Fontana praised the turnout, noting, “Families rediscovered the joy of playing together, a practice we’ve neglected in the age of smartphones.” The PizzAut truck was also present, offering a glimpse into the organization’s mission.

Why the International Day of Play Matters

The UN’s designation of the day underscores global recognition of play’s role in child development. Lombardy’s event aligns with similar initiatives, such as the World Play Day campaign by the LEGO Foundation, which emphasizes play’s impact on cognitive and social growth. The region’s focus on autism support also reflects broader efforts, like the European Union’s 2023 report on inclusive education, which highlighted the need for play-based interventions.
