Iowa Women’s Basketball Faces Illinois in Final Regular Season Test
IOWA CITY, Iowa — As the NCAA Tournament looms, the No. 9 University of Iowa women’s basketball team prepares for a crucial late-season matchup against the Illinois Fighting Illini on Thursday, Feb. 26, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The game, scheduled for 8 p.m. CT and broadcast on the Big Ten Network, presents an opportunity for the Hawkeyes to maintain momentum heading into the Big Ten Tournament.
Maintaining Focus Amidst Rising Expectations
Iowa coach Jan Jensen emphasized the importance of staying grounded despite increasing national attention. “When you start to zone in on March Madness…the expectations rise, and the target can’t even fit on our back anymore,” Jensen said. She stressed the need to approach the Illinois game as a “fun opportunity” and embrace the pressure that comes with success.
Jensen cautioned against complacency, noting that games following significant wins can be deceptively challenging. “Those of us in it recognize those games are actually almost harder,” she explained. “Everyone gets revved up for the big matchup…Now you kind of flip that.”
Aaliyah Guyton’s Return to Carver-Hawkeye Arena
Thursday’s game will mark the return of Illinois sophomore guard Aaliyah Guyton to Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Guyton transferred to Illinois after averaging 16.4 minutes and 4.7 points per game during her freshman season at Iowa. This season, she is averaging 19.6 minutes, 6.4 points, and 2.3 assists per game, with eight starts, and recently achieved a career-high 22 points against Wisconsin on Feb. 11.
Jensen expressed hope for a positive reception from the Iowa fans. “I believe Aaliyah Guyton is a really cool kid. She is a really great player, so I have nothing but respect for her,” Jensen stated. “I would hope our fans wouldn’t do that.”
Defensive Challenge Against Post-Heavy Illinois
Iowa will face a different offensive challenge against Illinois, which features a strong interior game led by forwards Berry Wallace (18.8 ppg) and Cearah Parchment (13.6 ppg). This challenge is compounded by the season-ending injury to Illinois guard Gretchen Dolan, who suffered a torn meniscus.
Jensen highlighted the versatility of Illinois’ bigs, noting their ability to shoot from beyond the arc. “Their actions put your bigs in guard defensive actions. That’s very challenging,” she said. Hannah Stuelke’s defensive versatility will be crucial for Iowa.
Game Prediction
Iowa is expected to secure a win against Illinois, projected as an NCAA Tournament No. 8 seed by ESPN. Steady production from Ava Heiden and continued defensive dominance from Stuelke are anticipated to be key factors. Iowa 72, Illinois 65.
