An iPhone Transformed into a “Pocket iPad” Thanks to a Bug
Inside, the iPhone and iPad have shared more DNA for years than apple publicly admits, but the company has always reserved certain privileges for its tablet. That artificial barrier has just been shaken: a user has managed to force the iPhone 17 Pro Max to run iPadOS and transform it with an exploit, literally, into an improvised mini-Mac. The finding not only demonstrates what the hardware is capable of, but also what Apple still does not want to allow.
An iPhone converted into a “pocket iPad” thanks to a specific failure
Although iOS and iPadOS share a common foundation,Apple maintains a strict dividing line to preserve the identity of each device. However, an exploit discovered in iOS 26.1 has broken that border.
A Reddit user showed evidence that the iPhone 17 Pro Max, taking advantage of its A19 Pro and 12GB RAM, is capable of launching iPadOS and opening multiple windows simultaneously when connected to an external monitor. the scene is more reminiscent of a compact desktop than a pocket cell phone.
The significant detail: Apple has already fixed the vulnerability in iOS 26.2 beta, so the feat is ephemeral, but enough to open the eternal debate about the limitations imposed by software.
Multi-window, external monitor and an experience close to macOS
Once the exploit is activated, the phone adopts functions that Apple only allows on the iPad:
- Floating windows macOS style
- Complete Dock
- Advanced support for external monitors
- Simultaneous execution of several apps without pauses
The published demo shows the iPhone connected with a single USB-C cable, powering a monitor and offering an experience very similar to Samsung DeX or Huawei’s desktop mode.
The difference here is obvious: Apple never wanted this to happen, possibly out of fear that the iPhone cannibalizes the iPad’s market… or even the
