Sharing files between Apple iPhones and Windows PCs has often felt clunky, requiring workarounds like third-party apps or email. Microsoft, however, is looking to simplify this process for users. In a recent announcement to Windows Insiders, Microsoft unveiled a feature directly integrated into Windows allowing users to seamlessly transfer files between their iPhone and Windows PCs.
“One of the biggest selling points of the Apple ecosystem is the ability to work seamlessly across different devices — like the handy AirDrop feature for easy file transfer,” according to
“In an announcement today to Windows Insiders, Microsoft said it’s introducing a way to make it easier to share files between an iPhone and a Windows PC.
Microsoft aims to eliminate the need for extra apps or emails to shuttle files between your iPhone and Windows PC. Their goal is to provide a simpler, more integrated way of sharing.
**Getting Started: Requirements:**
To benefit from this new feature, a few prerequisites need to be met:
- be a Windows Insider.
- have an iPhone running iOS 16 or higher.
- have the Link to Windows app on your iPhone, and
- have Phone Link installed and set up on your PC.
**How the New Feature Works:**
Microsoft provides an intuitive, straightforward process:
- Sharing a File from iPhone to PC: After establishing Phone Link, proceed from your iPhone. Head over to the desired file you wish to share, tap the Share symbol, and select “Link to Windows.” Next, choose your designated target PC from the available list of devices.
- Sharing a File from PC to iPhone (local files only): To share a file from your PC to your iPhone, right-click the chosen file and select the “Share” option. Within the share menu, opt for “My phone.”
**The Future of Interoperability:**
Microsoft’s new File Sharing feature marks another step towards bridging the gap between Apple and Windows ecosystems, allowing users to leverage both platforms seamlessly. Just last year, Microsoft brought phone calling and messaging from your Android phone directly to the Windows PC with Phone Link. This consistent drive for cross-platform functionality undoubtedly benefits users who work with both Apple and Windows devices.
