Pezeshkian Orders Restraint Towards Protesters Amid Iran Economic Concerns

TEHRAN – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has directed security forces to exercise restraint in dealing with protesters, provided national security is not jeopardized, according to his executive deputy, Mohammad-Jafar Ghaempanah. This comes as Iran faces ongoing demonstrations fueled by economic hardship.

Acknowledging Peaceful Protest

Ghaempanah affirmed the government’s recognition of the right to peaceful demonstration, particularly those centered around rising prices and labor demands. Though, he drew a firm line regarding violence, stating that incidents involving unrest fall outside the scope of protected protest.

Distinction Between Protesters and Rioters

A clear distinction was made between legitimate protesters and those engaging in destructive acts. Ghaempanah specified that individuals wielding weapons, knives, or firearms, or those targeting military and security installations, would be considered instigators of disorder and subject to a different response. He emphasized that President Pezeshkian has explicitly ordered a non-crackdown approach towards citizens protesting peacefully, as long as national security remains intact.

Economic Measures and Detainee Treatment

During a cabinet meeting, Central Bank Governor Abdolnasser Hemmati presented a report outlining planned measures to stabilize the foreign exchange rate. Ghaempanah acknowledged that currency fluctuations are a natural part of the ongoing economic restructuring process within the country.

Regarding those detained during the protests, Ghaempanah stated that security institutions would approach their cases with leniency. He underscored that individuals without involvement in violence or connections to foreign entities would be treated with “Islamic compassion.”

Leadership Transition and Interim Council

Recent events, including the death of Ali Khamenei, have led President Pezeshkian to call for the formation of an Interim Leadership Council to chart the country’s future. This council will include Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i, head of the Judiciary and Alireza Arafi.

Masoud Pezeshkian assumed the presidency on July 28, 2024, becoming the ninth president of Iran and the oldest person to hold the office, at 69 years aged. He is a member of the reformist faction and a former heart surgeon. He also currently serves as a member of the Interim Leadership Council, alongside Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje’i and Alireza Arafi, as of March 1, 2026.

Prior to his presidency, Pezeshkian served as Minister of Health and Medical Education from 2001 to 2005 under President Mohammad Khatami. He has also been a member of the Consultative Assembly since 2008, representing Tabriz, Osku and Azarshahr (East Azerbaijan).

In February 2026, Iranian Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah confirmed that President Pezeshkian was alive and in good health following alleged attacks during negotiations.
