As of early Wednesday, January 14, 2026, teh death toll stemming from the Iranian government’s crackdown on ongoing protests has risen to at least 2,571, according to reports from activists.

The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), a reliable source in previous periods of Iranian unrest, released the updated figures. HRANA reported that 2,403 of those killed were protesters, while 147 were identified as being affiliated with government forces.

the escalating violence has resulted in the tragic loss of life for vulnerable populations, including twelve children. Additionally, nine civilians not actively participating in the protests were also killed, according to HRANA. Authorities have detained more than 18,100 individuals in connection with the demonstrations.

The protests, initially sparked by economic grievances and restrictions on personal freedoms, have evolved into widespread calls for systemic change within the Islamic Republic. The government’s response has been marked by increasing force, including the use of live ammunition against demonstrators.

international organizations and governments have condemned the violence and called for accountability. However, the iranian government maintains that it is addressing a foreign-backed attempt to destabilize the country.
