Iran’s Exports to D-8 Nations Surge, Boosting Trade Ties
Tehran – Iran’s export performance to the Developing-8 (D-8) nations has witnessed a significant jump in the first eight months of the current Iranian calendar year (March 20-November 20). According to the Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA), the value of Iranian exports to the group of eight developing Islamic nations exceeded $6.317 billion, representing a remarkable increase of over 24% compared to the same period last year.
Key D-8 Trade Partners
During this period, Iran exported approximately 13.6 million tons of goods to seven of the D-8 member countries. Turkey emerged as Iran’s primary export destination, importing around 9.4 million tons of goods valued at over $4.4 billion. Pakistan and Indonesia followed as the second and third-largest importers, respectively.
D-8: Promoting Economic and Social Development
Established in 1997 by former Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, the D-8 group comprises Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, Egypt, and Nigeria. The organization’s fundamental objectives include fostering economic and trade cooperation, facilitating scientific collaboration, and promoting technology exchange among its members.
D-8 Trade Capacity and Future Plans
Sheikh Attar, a former Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, pointed out that the D-8’s trade capacity has now surpassed $68 billion. Recent developments underscore Iran’s commitment to expanding its economic involvement within the D-8 framework. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian attended the 11th D-8 Summit held in Cairo, Egypt, marking the first visit by an Iranian president to Egypt in over a decade.
During the summit, President Pezeshkian proposed the establishment of a D-8 development fund to facilitate joint investments among member countries. Iran’s Finance Minister Abdolnasser Hemmati also met with the D-8 Secretary-General to discuss strategies for boosting trade relations within the bloc, reaffirming the objective of achieving a $500 billion trade volume by 2030.
Looking Ahead: Growth and Opportunities
These initiatives demonstrate Iran’s unwavering focus on strengthening economic ties within the D-8 framework, aiming to leverage collective potential for mutual growth and development. As political and economic landscapes evolve, the D-8 continues to present promising opportunities for expanding trade and cooperation among its members.
