Coleman Focused as Ireland Pursues World Cup Berth

Republic of Ireland captain Seamus Coleman insists the current generation of players are not burdened by the disappointments of past World Cup qualifying campaigns as they prepare to face the Czech Republic in Prague on Thursday evening. The winner of the playoff semi-final will advance to a final match against either Denmark or North Macedonia, with a coveted spot in the World Cup finals at stake.

Past Playoff Heartbreak

Ireland has experienced heartbreak in previous World Cup playoffs, most notably the controversial defeat to France in 2009, marred by Thierry Henry’s handball and a heavy 5-1 loss to Denmark in 2017. However, Coleman believes the current squad is focused on creating its own history.

Confidence from Recent Successes

“It’s difficult to say if [past defeats] are fuelling the players, they’re all so young,” Coleman stated. “Obviously the nation was hurt massively, but in terms of the current group of players I don’t feel they’re dwelling too much on that hurt. To be honest, we’re just riding the wave of the confidence we’ve got as a group – which I think this young group deserves – from the last two games and we’re looking forward to Thursday night and then see what comes after that.”

Ireland secured their place in the playoffs with dramatic late wins against Portugal and Hungary in November, fueled by the emergence of young striker Troy Parrott.

Coleman Declares Fitness

Despite limited playing time for Everton this season, Coleman has declared himself fit and ready for the crucial match. “No. Everyone wants to be playing, it’s the way it works,” he said when questioned about his match fitness. “I didn’t have many minutes before the last game, but to be honest, I train at 100% every single day, sometimes to my own fault. Sometimes I have gone too hard and it has cost me at times, but it is the only way I know. I am feeling solid and ready for the game.”

Czech Republic Preparations

The match will be played at Prague’s Fortuna Arena. Czech Republic boss Miroslav Koubek has emphasized the importance of containing the in-form Troy Parrott, stating, “We do have some information, so now it will all be about eliminating him in a smart way. We will just have to stop him.”

Despite being stripped of the captaincy, Tomas Soucek remains a key player for the Czech Republic, according to Koubek, who described him as a “full-fat” player.

Hallgrimsson’s Calm Approach

Ireland’s head coach, Heimir Hallgrimsson, is without suspended defender Liam Scales and injured midfielder Josh Cullen. However, he has urged his players to maintain the form that secured their playoff spot. “We all know by now why we got good results and good performances, and that’s the key, not be over-ambitious tomorrow, stay on point, focus on why we are here and trying to improve that, not only this game, continuously,” he said.

Coleman concluded by expressing a sense of duty to the Irish nation, stating, “To see how the nation is feeling now is incredible and we’ve got a duty to try and make them even happier.”
