Holiday Bookings Surge 13% as Irish Travelers Seek Sunshine Amidst Wet February
As Ireland experiences a particularly wet start to 2026, holiday bookings have risen sharply, with a 13% increase in sales compared to the same period last year, according to Travel Counsellors Ireland. The surge in inquiries and bookings suggests a strong desire among Irish travelers for warmer climates and brighter destinations.
Weather’s Impact on Travel Decisions
Cathy Burke, Managing Director of Travel Counsellors Ireland, noted the significant increase in sales during the first two weeks of February. “The first two weeks in February are way up in sales,” Burke stated. “Sales were up 13% on the same 16 days last year.” While acknowledging that factors like post-January paychecks may play a role, Burke believes the dreary weather is a major driver. “All they want is sunshine and something to look forward to, so I do believe the weather’s having a big impact,” she added. Top Destinations for Summer and Winter 2026
Despite a 10% year-on-year decrease in trips to the US in January, the destination remains within the top three choices for Irish travelers. Currently, cruises are the most popular summer bookings, with ocean cruising experiencing continued growth. Spain, including the Canary Islands, and the US (specifically Orlando, Florida, Nevada, Nashville, and California) are also in high demand. For winter travel, the UAE, Vietnam, and Japan are proving to be popular choices.
The Rise of Cruise Travel
Cruises are emerging as a dominant trend in the travel sector for 2026, driven by value for money, all-inclusive packages, and early booking offers. Ocean cruise bookings with Travel Counsellors have increased by 20% year-on-year, while river cruise bookings have seen an even more substantial rise of 60%. RTÉ River cruises offer a more intimate experience, typically accommodating fewer than 200 passengers, and allow for immersive exploration of towns and countryside.
‘Coolcations’ and Shifting Travel Patterns
A new trend, termed “coolcations,” is gaining traction, with travelers opting to avoid the intense heat of Southern Europe during July and August. This shift is contributing to increased popularity of destinations like Denmark and Norway, supported by increased flight capacity and diverse activities. Travel Counsellors has observed that more people are booking travel for June than for August, seeking to avoid peak season prices and school closures. RTÉ
US Travel Remains Strong Despite Political Concerns
Despite potential concerns related to US political developments, travel to the United States remains stable. Tour America founder Mary McKenna noted that while there was initial apprehension regarding potential impacts from changes to the ESTA program or statements from US President Donald Trump, these concerns have not significantly deterred Irish holidaymakers. A favorable exchange rate, with the Euro gaining strength against the US dollar (currently around $1.18 compared to parity last year), is also contributing to the continued appeal of US destinations.
