prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stated on Saturday he will evaluate his role in the Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) disappointing performance in the recent Upper House election. This assessment will be informed by an upcoming review of the election results and feedback from LDP lawmakers. The LDP plans to publish a summary report on the election’s outcome by the end of the month.

Calls for Leadership Change

During a general meeting of LDP lawmakers from both chambers of parliament on Friday, several members reportedly called for Ishiba to resign. In response, the party’s presidential election administration commission will solicit opinions from all LDP lawmakers and representatives from the party’s 47 prefectural branches regarding the possibility of holding an emergency leadership election.

Ishiba acknowledged the ongoing discussions,stating,”Various things are going on at the same time,so I want to properly recognize them and deepen my thinking.” However, he reaffirmed his intention to maintain his current leadership team, saying, “We will do our best to address policy issues that we have to tackle every day.”

Focus on US-Japan Trade Agreement

The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the recently agreed-upon trade deal with the United States, specifically concerning tariffs on Japanese vehicles and auto parts. while an agreement has been reached to reduce these tariffs, implementation is still pending. Ishiba pledged continued efforts to ensure swift and reliable implementation of the deal, stating, “We will continue to work hard to ensure that this is implemented as quickly and reliably as possible.”
