UNRWA Ban: Palestinian Refugees Fear Dismantling of Right of Return
Israel’s decision to halt the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) has sparked outrage among Palestinians living in refugee camps in the occupied West Bank. They view this move as an attempt to undermine their fundamental right of return.
The Israeli Knesset unanimously passed a bill on Monday to ban UNRWA from operating within its territories, effectively targeting its work in Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem. The legislation will come into effect in 90 days.
A Symbol of Hope, Now Facing Elimination
For Palestinians, UNRWA represents more than just aid and services; it’s a symbol of their enduring claim to a homeland. Suheyb Rummane, a resident of the al-Amari refugee camp, spoke to the Turkish Anadolu Agency (AA), emphasizing the agency’s role as a witness to the Palestinian right of return.
“Israel’s decision will end the issue of Palestinian refugees and end their right of return,” he said.
Rummane, 69, expressed his deep concern over the decision, calling it “unacceptable” and urging international pressure on Israel. He highlighted the detrimental impact on the lives of refugees, affecting everything from education to healthcare.
“The Palestinian people will not remain silent and will not accept this decision,” Rummane declared. “We will raise our voices strongly. The world also needs to take responsibility.”
A Dangerous Precedent
Mahmoud Umaytir, a resident of the Qalandia refugee camp in northern East Jerusalem, characterized Israel’s decision as “dangerous,” predicting negative consequences for all aspects of life in Palestinian refugee camps.
“This decision will have negative consequences on all aspects of life in Palestinian refugee camps, including education and health,” Umaytir said. He acknowledged the symbolic importance of UNRWA but stressed the need for Palestinians to move towards self-reliance.
Umaytir advocated for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state as the ultimate solution, enabling Palestinians to break free from dependence on international assistance.
“Israel continues its policy of striking a blow to every aspect of Palestinian life, especially the refugee problem,” he lamented.
Violence in Gaza Continues Unabated
This announcement comes amidst a continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where Israel has launched a brutal offensive against the Palestinian territory since an incursion by Hamas militants in October. The Israeli onslaught has displaced almost the entire population of Gaza.
Despite calls from the United Nations Security Council for an immediate ceasefire, Israel has persisted in its military actions. Parallel efforts by the US, Egypt, and Qatar to negotiate a ceasefire and prisoner swap have been unsuccessful due to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s refusal to halt the offensive.
The International Court of Justice is currently considering a genocide case against Israel for its actions in Gaza.
