Italian Navy’s *Marceglia* Embarks on Indo-Pacific ‘Projection’ Campaign
On January 20, the Italian Navy frigate Antonio Marceglia (F 597), belonging to the Bergamini-class of FREMMs, departed from its homeport at La Spezia Naval Base for a significant six-month operational campaign in the Indo-Pacific region. This ambitious deployment will see the vessel visit at least twelve countries, engaging in multinational exercises, exhibitions, and promoting international cooperation.
“[The Italian Navy presence is increasing in the Indo-Pacific]… The principle is to reinforce our presence in an area as extremely important as the Indo-Pacific, becoming strategically relevant despite not being part of our primary area of interest, the Mediterranean,” stated Undersecretary of State for Defence, Matteo Perego di Cremnago,
The campaign, dubbed “Operational Projection,” will involve extensive training, Joint exercises, and visits to several key naval installations across the Indo-Pacific region. Naval News understands the deployment will last approximately six months, with the frigate expected to return to Italy in the first half of July 2025.
The Marceglia’s itinerary includes stops at Djibouti, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, India, Qatar, and Oman. During its extended journey, the frigate aims to strengthen ties with regional partners, demonstrating Italy’s commitment to maritime security and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
The Marceglia (F 597) is a multipurpose frigate equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, capable of conducting missions ranging from air defense and anti-surface warfare to escort duties and humanitarian assistance/disaster relief operations. This deployment showcases the versatility and capabilities of the Italian Navy and its commitment to global maritime security.
