Confindustria President Orsini Calls for Energy Speculation Halt Amidst Middle East Concerns
Italian industrial association Confindustria, led by President Emanuele Orsini, is urging a halt to financial speculation on energy prices following escalating tensions in the Middle East. Orsini expressed concerns about the economic impact of the conflict, particularly on Italian and European competitiveness.
Economic Impact of Middle East Conflict
Orsini highlighted the significance of Gulf countries as a key market for Italy, with 32 billion euros in trade, including a 11 billion euro positive balance. He warned that a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz could increase shipping times by 15 days, creating logistical challenges and potential delays.1
Rising Energy Costs and Call for Intervention
The president of Confindustria voiced alarm over rapidly increasing energy costs, noting a jump from 107 euros per MWh on Friday, March 5th, 2026, to 151 euros per MWh on March 6th, 2026. He emphasized the detrimental effect on both businesses and families. Orsini called for swift action through a bill decree to address the issue, stating that current energy prices are “unacceptable” and driven by speculation.1
European Policy and Stability Pact
Orsini advocated for a stronger, more unified European approach, emphasizing the need for a single energy market, a functioning capital market, and a unified defense strategy. He also suggested considering a move beyond the Stability Pact to provide financial flexibility, citing Germany’s 26 billion euro allocation for energy costs and France’s price cap of 70 euros per MWh.1
Importance of Exports and New Markets
Orsini underscored the critical role of exports, currently valued at 626 billion euros with a 100 billion euro positive balance, to Italy’s economic stability. He pointed to uncertainties regarding trade duties with the United States, Italy’s primary non-European market, and the need to explore new trade opportunities. He highlighted the potential of Mercosur (valued at 14 billion euros), India, Japan, and Canada.1
