James McClean Faces Career Crossroads Amid Chronic Hip Injury

Derry City winger James McClean has revealed he is undergoing a critical medical evaluation that could determine the future of his professional football career. The 37-year-old Ireland international returned to his hometown club in January on a two-year deal but has struggled with a worsening hip condition exacerbated by playing on the club’s artificial surface.

McClean took to social media on Thursday to share the extent of his injury troubles, describing the past six weeks as “hell.” He explained that while he has played through pain throughout his career, the restriction in movement caused by the hip issue has become increasingly tricky to manage, both physically and mentally.

“To be honest, this is a difficult post for me to write for a number of reasons – mainly due to the uncertainty of the outcome – but I feel it’s best to put it in black and white,” McClean wrote in his post.

The winger disclosed that a medical specialist had advised him 10 days prior that his body had “no business being on a football pitch” due to the severity of the damage. Despite the grim assessment, McClean said he respects the expert’s opinion but remains determined to fight for a chance to continue playing.

“I was told by a specialist 10 days ago that my body had no business being on a football pitch due to the severity of damage. I respect his honesty and expert opinion but I have never been one to lay down without a fight,” he stated.

McClean is set to attend a “last chance” appointment with his specialist on Friday to determine whether surgery could extend his career. He returned to Derry City after 15 years away, motivated by the club’s ambition under manager Tiernan Lynch to win an elusive league title, but his spell has been hampered by injury and suspension.

The Ireland centurion, who won 103 caps for his country, acknowledged that playing on Derry City’s astroturf surface at Celtic Park has accelerated the deterioration of his hip condition. The club has since announced plans to replace the artificial surface with grass, with the new pitch expected to be ready in the summer.

McClean has featured in 11 of Derry City’s 13 fixtures since joining from Wrexham, including the President’s Cup Final against Shamrock Rovers. He was sent off in his last appearance on April 10th during a 2-2 draw with Dundalk at Oriel Park but expressed hope that it would not be his final appearance for the club.

Despite the uncertainty, McClean emphasized his commitment to giving everything he can while he is still able to contribute at an acceptable physical level. His future now hinges on the outcome of Friday’s medical consultation, which could either pave the way for surgical intervention or force him to consider retirement.
