Jan Peters: A Career Spanning Dutch and Italian Football

Jan Peters, born August 18, 1954, is a Dutch former professional footballer and coach who enjoyed a career playing for several prominent clubs in the Netherlands and Italy. Known for his passing ability, earning him the nickname “Jantje Breed,” Peters’s journey included a potential move to Ajax and a later experience with a financial issue even as playing in Italy.

Early Career and NEC Debut

Peters began his football journey with VV Germania before joining NEC. He made his debut for NEC on November 14, 1971, in a home game against FC Groningen [1]. He played for NEC for six seasons, appearing in 165 matches and scoring 16 goals.

Near Miss with Ajax

In 1974, while still a young player, Peters attracted the interest of Ajax, with Hans Kraay Sr. Recently appointed as manager. Though, the transfer ultimately fell through after Peters failed a medical examination [2]. Peters later expressed uncertainty about the reason for failing the medical, suggesting it may not have been related to his knee.

Move to AZ ’67 and Success

In July 1977, Peters signed with AZ ’67, where Kraay Sr. Was now the manager [1]. At AZ, he played alongside players like Ronald Spelbos, Peter Arntz, Kristen Nygaard, Kurt Welzl, Kees Kist, and Pier Tol. The team achieved significant success in the 1980–81 season, winning the Eredivisie title and the KNVB Cup, and reaching the final of the UEFA Cup. After five seasons with AZ, Peters moved to Italy.

Italian Football and a Financial Issue

In the summer of 1982, Peters joined Serie A club Genoa [1]. He later played for Atalanta before returning to NEC. While at Genoa, Peters became involved in a “black money affair” [2], involving payments made with unmarked lire. During a police raid, his contracts were discovered, leading to concerns about his passport being confiscated. Peters prepared to leave the country by boat but ultimately had his passport returned after a favorable court resolution [2].

Return to NEC and Later Career

Peters returned to NEC in 1986, playing for another two seasons and adding 3 goals in 41 appearances [1]. He finished his career playing amateur football with De Treffers, totaling 387 club appearances and 57 goals throughout his career [1].

International Career

Peters also represented the Netherlands internationally, earning 31 caps and scoring 4 goals between 1974 and 1982 [1]. He was part of the Dutch squad during the 1976 UEFA European Championship [1].

Managerial Career

Following his playing career, Peters transitioned into coaching, managing SJN, De Treffers (multiple times), and TOP Oss (as a caretaker).
