Jane Birkin’s daughters stir confusion over cause of death

Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon, the two living daughters of Jane Birkin, have published a statement on social networks that frames the death of their mother, last Sunday, in “16 years of fierce battle against the disease” which worsened after a stroke in September 2021. Since then, “her family and the wonderful people who have cared for her have been by her side day and night,” they write.

In the family’s explanation there are some lines that suggest that Birkin knowingly hastened his death. “It’s been a few days since she had walked again, she was motivated to return to her Olympia and had decided to regain its independence. That first night alone was the last. She had decided,” Gainsbourg and Doillon add in this text, referring to Birkin’s last attempt to return to the stage of the Olympia Theater in Paris.

Representatives for the singer-actress said Monday night that Birkin died of natural causes. After the publication of the statement, her daughters have insisted on that explanation before AFP and R% adio Television Luxembourg. In their statements to RTL, they have specified that the last sentence of the statement should not give rise to misunderstandings. The funeral will take place in the privacy of family and friends.
