Farewell to Latvian Cinema Legend Jānis Streičs

Latvia is preparing to bid farewell to Jānis Streičs, a towering figure in Latvian cinema and theater, who passed away on March 5th at the age of 89. A state farewell will be held on Sunday, March 22nd, at the Latvian Society House in Riga, beginning at 12:00 PM.

A Life Dedicated to the Arts

Jānis Streičs was a multifaceted artist – a film and theater director, screenwriter, actor, writer, and painter. Born on September 26, 1936, in “Anspokos” of Preiļu parish, he began his successful directing career in 1964. Throughout his life, Streičs remained engaged with global events while consistently finding and highlighting joy, bringing warmth to those around him, as noted by his family.

Public Remembrance and Screenings

To honor Streičs’ legacy, Riga municipality will screen a selection of his films throughout the day on March 22nd in Vērmanes Garden. The schedule includes:

  • 12:00 PM: Human Child
  • 1:30 PM: My Friend is a Frivolous Person
  • 3:00 PM: Limousine in the Color of Midsummer’s Eve
  • 4:30 PM: Stranger Passions
  • 6:00 PM: Rudolf’s Legacy

the bells of the Riga Town Hall will play Raimonds Pauls’ melody from Streičs’ film Theatre at 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM, 4:00 PM, and 6:00 PM on March 22nd.

Memorial Book and Public Tributes

From March 22nd to March 23rd, a memorial book will be available at the Latvian Society House, allowing friends, colleagues, and admirers to share their memories and appreciation for Streičs’ work. From March 17th to March 23rd, quotes from characters in Jānis Streičs’ films, which have become part of Latvian folklore, will be displayed on the monitors of “Rīgas satiksme.”

Recognition and Awards

Jānis Streičs received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Order of the Three Stars and the title of Honorary Member of the Latvian Academy of Sciences.
