The tremor originated at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers beneath the seabed. Muhammad Al Aula, the Coordinator for Social and Cultural Affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Tokyo, stated that the embassy continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to monitor the earthquake situation and potential tsunami. “KBRI Tokyo continues to coordinate with the local authorities to keep a close watch on the latest situation regarding the earthquake and the potential for tsunamis,” he noted in a statement received by Tempo on Tuesday, April 21, 2026. He added that the monitoring of Indonesian nationals is being facilitated through regular communication with community networks, particularly those situated in Iwate, Aomori, and Hokkaido Prefectures. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for Aomori, Iwate, and parts of Hokkaido shortly after the quake. Tremors were reportedly felt as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter. According to a report by Japan Today, the earthquake’s magnitude was later revised upward to 7.7, accompanied by warnings of an increased risk of powerful aftershocks. Approximately 40 minutes after the initial shock, a tsunami wave measuring 80 centimeters was reported to have reached the port in Kuji City, Iwate Prefecture. Advisory for Indonesian Citizens The Embassy has advised Indonesian nationals to remain calm although continuing to monitor tsunami warnings issued by Japanese authorities. “We urge our Indonesian citizens to remain calm,” Al Aula remarked.
