Pritzker and Emanuel Both Consider 2028 Presidential Runs
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel are both positioning themselves as potential Democratic contenders for the 2028 presidential election. Pritzker acknowledged the speculation surrounding his plans during a speech in Washington D.C. On Saturday, March 21, 2026, while also playfully addressing his recent weight loss.
Pritzker Addresses 2028 Speculation and Weight Loss
Speaking at the annual Gridiron Club and Foundation Awards, Pritzker joked about his use of Wegovy, a popular weight-loss drug, stating, “I’m JB Pritzker, governor of the great state of Illinois and if you’re seeing me in person for the very first time, yes, I’m the gov who put ‘gov’ in Wegovy.”1
Despite the ongoing discussion about his presidential ambitions, Pritzker emphasized his current focus on the people of Illinois, echoing a sentiment expressed by Barack Obama in 2006.1
Emanuel’s Potential Challenge
Pritzker’s speech took place before an audience of over 560 journalists, media executives, lawmakers, diplomats, and military officers, including Emanuel.1 The presence of Emanuel, also considered a potential 2028 candidate, adds an interesting dynamic to the race, particularly given their longstanding relationship.
The two have a history of collaboration, working together on initiatives such as bringing the tech incubator 1871 to Chicago and advancing quantum computing at the University of Chicago.3 However, a potential matchup between the two Illinois Democrats could become contentious.
Emanuel acknowledged the “awkward” prospect of running against Pritzker, stating their friendship would be tested if they both pursued the presidency.3
Pritzker’s Rising Influence in Illinois Politics
JB Pritzker has been consolidating his control over the Illinois Democratic Party, a level of influence not seen since the eras of Richard J. Daley and Michael Madigan.2 This strengthened position within the state party could provide a significant boost to any national campaign.
Gridiron Club Dinner and Political Satire
The Gridiron Club dinner, a tradition dating back to Grover Cleveland, featured political satire, including parodies of the Trump administration and the emerging 2028 presidential field.1 Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders also delivered remarks, offering playful jabs at Pritzker, including a reference to the Pritzker family’s ownership of the Hyatt hotel chain.1
