Jean Dujardin Reveals Why He Turned Down a Major French Film Success

Jean Dujardin, the celebrated actor known for his role in The Artist, has revealed his selective approach to choosing roles throughout his career. The 53-year-old actor emphasized that he often declines projects, a practice he attributes to a sense of intuition and a commitment to creative consistency.

Rejecting a Blockbuster: Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis

During a recent interview with Brut, Dujardin disclosed that he turned down the opportunity to star in Dany Boon’s 2008 comedy Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, which became one of the highest-grossing French films of all time, attracting over 20 million viewers in theaters. Dujardin explained his decision, stating, “It was coherent, I didn’t notice myself in the character.”

Prioritizing Consistency Over Commercial Success

Dujardin’s approach extends beyond simply disliking a particular character. He seeks “consistency” in his work, even when presented with potentially successful projects. He elaborated, “You can put the best film in front of me, if I’m consistent, I’ll advise you: ‘No, it’s for Kad Merad.’” He added that he has declined numerous roles for similar reasons and harbors no regrets.

Finding His “Playroom” with OSS 117

The actor contrasted his rejections with his immediate connection to the OSS 117 franchise, where he found his “playroom” and a strong creative fit. This highlights his preference for roles that resonate with his artistic sensibilities.

Success is Not the Sole Goal

Dujardin underscored that he doesn’t chase success at all costs. “I’ve had success, I’ve had less, will I have it again? I don’t recognize,” he stated. “But as long as I can glance at my filmography, as long as I can watch my films and I find it coherent, that’s fine with me!”
