Jeju National University School of Medicine, possibility of selecting up to 56 students
Number of students selected per high school: 1.0 → 2.5
According to an analysis, Jeju is the place that will benefit the most from the local doctor system that will be implemented starting this year as the number of medical school recruits increases. It is predicted that high schools with local talent selection will be able to utilize the local doctor system selection process, and the number of students eligible to enter medical school per high school will more than double.
As a result of Jongno Academy’s analysis on the 12th of 1,112 high schools nationwide that are subject to the local medical school system, Jeju was identified as the region where the introduction of this system would have the greatest advantage in getting accepted to local medical schools.
Jeju National University, which operates the only medical school in Jeju, selected 21 medical students from a local talent selection process targeting 22 high schools as of the 2026 school year. For the 2028-2031 academic year, an additional 35 students can be selected each year through the regional doctor system selection process, for a total of 56 students. On average, only 1.0 students per high school were able to enter medical school, but 2.5 students will be able to do so.
However, unlike the 2028-2031 academic year (613 students each year), the number of students increased this year is only 490, so it is expected that fewer students will enter medical school through the local doctor system.
In Gangwon, the average number of medical students selected per high school increased by 0.9 from 1.1 to 2.0, making it the second beneficiary after Jeju. Next was Chungcheong (1.3 people → 2.1 people), Daegu/Gyeongbuk (1.2 people → 1.7 people), Honam (1.5 people → 2.0 people), Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam (1.1 people → 1.5 people), and Gyeongin (0 people → 0.3 people).
Lim Seong-ho, CEO of Jongno Academy, said, “With the introduction of the regional doctor system, the advantages and disadvantages of each region have become greater than they are now,” and “depending on the degree, the range of fluctuations in the acceptance criteria for each university may also increase.”
