Jets Interview Ron Rivera for Head Coaching Vacancy

The New York Jets have narrowed down their search for a new head coach, completing an interview with experienced NFL veteran Ron Rivera, according to recent announcements. This move comes as the team seeks to rebuild and establish a winning culture after a challenging season.

Rivera’s Impressive Coaching Resume

Rivera boasts a proven track record in the NFL, holding head coaching positions with both the Carolina Panthers and the Washington Commanders. During his seven seasons with the Panthers (2011-2019), he led them to the playoffs seven times, including a Super Bowl appearance in 2015 after a dominant 15-1 regular season. His success earned him the NFL Coach of the Year award twice, in 2013 and 2015.

Most recently, Rivera served as the head coach of the Washington Commanders from 2020 to 2023, compiling a record of 26-40-1 and leading the team to the playoffs in his inaugural season.

Early Coaching Career and Notable Connections

Prior to his head coaching roles, Rivera gained valuable experience as a defensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears and the San Diego Chargers. His ability to develop strong defensive units earned him recognition as the Pro Football Writers of America Assistant Coach of the Year in 2005.

Rivera’s coaching career began with the Chicago Bears, the team that drafted him in 1984. He later served as a linebackers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1999 to 2003 under current Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid. This stint saw Rivera working alongside seven future head coaches.

The Jets’ Coaching Search and Leadership

Jets chairman Woody Johnson is spearheading the search for both a head coach and a general manager. The team has enlisted the assistance of The 33rd Team to identify and evaluate potential candidates. Jeff Ulbrich and Phil Savage currently serve as the team’s interim head coach and general manager, respectively.
