Jim Carrey Honored with César Award in Rare Public Appearance
Jim Carrey made a rare return to the public eye at the 51st César Awards in Paris on Thursday evening, receiving an Honorary César Award. The actor, known for his comedic roles and increasingly private life, was visibly moved during the ceremony.
A Return to the Spotlight
The Truman Show star, who has stepped back from frequent public appearances in recent years, accepted the award, which recognizes significant contributions to cinema. The French Academy described Carrey as “one of the most original voices in modern cinema,” noting that his function “reminds audiences that cinema can do more than entertain” and embodies “an unrelenting boldness.”
Emotional Acceptance and Family Ties
Director Michel Gondry, who collaborated with Carrey on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind 22 years ago, introduced the actor. Carrey delivered an emotional speech entirely in French, albeit with a noticeable American accent. He reflected on his family history, revealing that his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, Marc-François Carré, emigrated from Saint-Malo, France, to Canada approximately 300 years ago. He remarked, “Tonight with this magnificent honor, this square (carré in French) has reach full circle.”
Carrey too expressed gratitude to his family, including his daughter Jane, grandson Jackson, and girlfriend Mina. He fondly remembered his father, Percy Joseph Carrey, acknowledging the values of love, generosity, and laughter he instilled.
A Humorous Reflection on Language
Displaying his characteristic humor, Carrey playfully assessed his French speaking skills, stating, “So, how was my French? Almost mediocre, right? Forgive me, I didn’t speak French, but I’m just learning it. My tongue is tired.”
Recent and Past Work
While largely retreating from the spotlight in the 2010s, Carrey recently reprised his role as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, citing financial needs as a motivating factor for his return. Deadline reports that he admitted needing the money for the role.
